Indra’s Valentine
A hand built repository containing an encaustic surface inlaid with found deer fur. The individual pieces of fur are laid out to depict a spider’s web.
The Buddhist metaphor of Indra’s Net is often represented by a spider’s web and illustrates the concept of interconnectedness and the importance of all beings. In this piece, I explored the melding of religious iconographies to further venerate the concept as well as the materials found within. Placing this Buddhist iconography within the visual language of Catholic reliquaries, transforms the very materials that make up the image- deer fur, beeswax, and tree resin- into relics, items with innate spiritual significance.
