Luna 3

A hand built, wall hung glassed repository containing dozens of found insect wings depicting the far side of our moon.

Luna 3 refers to the Soviet space craft that captured the first ever images of our Moon's far side. As a child, my father would take me into the backyard to stargaze. There he taught me the constellations and the phases of the moon. Then, as now, it boggles my mind that I have only seen one side of our Moon with my own eyes. I think of the day, October 7th 1959, that the Luna 3 sent the first images back to Earth, as a day of great humility for humankind. In my own spiritual practice, I have come to value humility above all else. This piece depicts the far face of the Moon using moth wings I collected while in the woods. Moths use the Moon for orientation when flying, known as transverse navigation. I too use the Moon for celestial guidance.
