L'évidence
A freestanding sculpture consisting of a found white-eyed vireo nest that has been re-woven to a branch. The branch is held in place by gold findings and carved balsam wood. Below the nest is a dusting of powdered mica which is framed by marbled paper. The piece is encased by a marble and glass case.
This sculpture investigates the evidence of knowledge beyond what human consciousness can comprehend. I marvel at the architecture of the nests of birds. At some point in their evolution, female vireos were inspired to build their nests lower and lower into the forking understory branch of the tree, until the nests began to hang. Perhaps the orientation allows for less obstructed sightlines. We can only guess, because we are only human. I found this nest on the forest floor. I followed through with my urge to re-weave the intricately made shelter to its rightful place, hanging in the fork of a branch.
