Reverence

A hand built, freestanding reliquary containing a plumb bob belonging to my grandfather. The instrument is held suspended by a brass and silver armature. Below, on the base of the reliquary, the plumb bob drafts meditative ellipses in dust made of my collection of found bird eggs.

This sculpture celebrates the gifts given to me by my grandfather. My grandfather built our family home, brick by brick using this plumb bob, in a period of coarse reckoning in his life. In the shelter he and my grandmother created, I was given the tools I would need to be at home in myself. While walking beside my grandfather, I learned gratitude and awe for the nature around me- the many species of trees, the language of the birds, the messages of the clouds. This communication with the natural world has centered me in times of great distress and buoyed me higher in times of joy.
