Seeker’s valentine

A hand built, wall hung, glassed repository containing an intricate design formed using bones extracted from found owl pellets. The interior walls of the piece are gilded. The format is an adaptation on the antique shell craft known as Sailor's Valentines.

In this piece, I am exploring the spiritual clarity that can be found in the natural world. Having been raised Catholic, I have forever been intrigued by the items and iconography used in organized religions. As an adult, I feel most in tune with my spiritual practice when I am outside in nature. In this piece, I interpreted the image of the Scared Heart as a Buddhist mandala. The configuration is made using small animal bones extracted from owl pellets (the undigested prey remains regurgitated by owls) that I have collected over many years walking the woodlands of Appalachia.
