The madness of grief

A hand built, freestanding reliquary consisting of three glass domes perched on a rose wood base, atop a pewter pedestal. At the center of the inner most dome, a sea star is held aloft by a thin silver wire rooted to a glass marble held steady by a silver cap containing the fur of my deceased dog. The domes are laden with an explosion of debris- sea urchin spines, shells, and coral.

This piece attempts to express the experience of acute grief. After the unexpected death of my beloved dog, Greta, I was consumed by the panic of missing her. In the wake of her death, I found myself on her favorite beach after a storm, the sand strewn with gifts from the sea. In this sculpture, the debris swirls around the vulnerable starfish, beneath which sits a reliquary containing her fur.
